It does. In fact, you must cross it if you wish to travel between Mahogany and Blackthorn. It serves as an excellent source of Ice-types, but beyond that...

See, I could've been a little okay with just getting some kinda keepsake from back home instead, but I don't even need a lamp! [HUFF HARRUMPH GRUMBLE]

Beyond that it's just one more reason to stay in the city instead of dealing with the great outdoors. If this dumb place doesn't just drop me there, anyway, since apparently that happens! It's not so bad if your team includes a high-levelled Fire-type. Along with a Pokémon that can deal with poisonous bats, of course, but those are a necessity in every cave, not only the frozen ones.

Poisonous bats? You've got to be— [She goes to set the lamp aside as she talks but she's too mad about everything, just, like, the world at large, to just put things places like a reasonable human being, so instead she just kind of flings the lamp.

The following off-screen clattering is the sound of everything on her desk getting knocked onto the floor in the process.] Oh, damn—! Ugh, whatever—did you seriously say poisonous bats?

Not only are they poisonous, but they are also fast and can confuse Pokémon, before draining their energy.

That's terrifying! That's the stuff supernatural horror movies are made of! Aren't there places you can't get to without going through a cave, too?!

There is Blackthorn, unless you have a Pokémon that flies. Azalea can be reached without crossing the Union Cave, but you have to go through Goldenrod and the Ilex Forest instead.
